GENERAL INFORMATION

Dear Colleagues!

We invite you to take part in the 4-th international workshop
“Diffusion and Diffusional Phase Transformations in Alloys”.

Diffusion controlled processes still remain the most important and interesting question of materials science. Among the problems, which now are on the foreground, the initial stages of solid state reactions, analysis of nano materials and phenomena, thermo- and electromigration, stability of integral schemes, diffusion controlled morphology evolution in open systems stand out. Number of challenging problems still exist in “classical” areas of nucleation, reactive and interdiffusion, phase growth in multicomponent and binary systems, decomposition and ripening. Success of diffusional investigations depends on the quality of diffusional contact of scientists. So, one of the main conditions of our work is practically unlimited (within reasonable limits) time for discussions. The problem questions will be the main stream of conference. We believe, that beautiful nature of dendrological park “Sophiyivka” allows our participants, following the traditions of Plato and Aristotle, to combine the effective work and good rest.

TOPICS OF WORKSHOP (preliminary)

  • Interdiffusion.
  • Reactive diffusion.
  • Electro- and thermomigration
  • Liquid-solid phase interaction
  • Decomposition - from nucleation to ripening.
  • Phase transformations in nano-systems.
  • Multicomponent and multiphase systems.
  • Driven systems (including irradiation).

ROUND TABLES

We ask to send your suggestions concerning the topics of round tables. You may send the text of your idea-hint (it will be placed on our web-site) in order to provoke an interest of participants.

PUBLICATION

The short reports will be published in special volume of Bulletin of Cherkasy National University before the conference start. For publication of full papers the following journals are considered: "Metal Physics and Advanced Technologies” (Kiev), “Journal of Functional Materials” (Moscow), “Defect and Diffusion Forum” (these editions agree to publish proceedings). Final choice will be made later.

REGISTRATION FEE (PRELIMINARY)

Registration fee - 230 EUR (included: welcome party, meals, coffee breaks, Conference Dinner, proceedings, guided tours, concerts).

Student fee - 120 EUR.

Accompanying Persons - 150 EUR (included: welcome party, meals, coffee breaks, Conference Dinner, guided tours, special cultural program).

ACCOMMODATION

You may choose various variants - from 3 EUR per night to 80 EUR per night. More detailed information will be given in the second announcement.

LOCATION

The workshop will be held in the conference hall of dendrological park “Sofiyivka” (www.sofiyivka.org.ua), founded in 1796. The free discussions can be continued on the park territory. This park is looked like a fairy tale. Indeed, the composition of central part of “Sofiyivka” is based on the topics of Ancient Greece and Rome mythology and some places are similar to the habitation of Greek Gods, heroes and philosophers.

HISTORY

Conferences on phase transformations and diffusion in the epsilon-vicinity of Cherkasy (Ukraine) became a good tradition. The first meetings (1989, 1991, 1993, 1995) were organized by Institute for Metal Physics (Kiev) together with Cherkasy physicists with participation of Ukrainian and Russian specialists in the mentioned field. Main advantage of those meetings was informal atmosphere, and sufficient time for detailed discussions. In 1998 conference became multinational (70 participants from 13 countries) and obtained its present name (DIFTRANS). Success of DIFTRANS’98 inspired us to organize DIFTRANS’2001. It was held on the base of sanatorium Svitanok at the bank of Dnieper. 50 leading specialists and young scientists from France, Germany, Israel, Poland, Russia, The Netherlands, Ukraine, USA gathered in Cherkasy to discuss the most “fresh” and urgent problems of inter- and reactive diffusion, kinetics of phase transformations, new experimental methods. Conference seemed to be successful, it brought new understanding of some old problems, and demonstrated new possibilities for investigation of atomic migration and structural transformations in alloys. DIFTRANS 2004 (Sokyrne, also at the bank of Dnieper near Cherkasy) was more local (taking into account that DIMAT-04 in Krakow was the central diffusion event that year), but also interesting and useful. It was organized for the scientists of former Soviet Union, and gathered specialists from Kiev, Moscow, Kharkov, Ekaterinburg, Tula, Odesa, Poltava. Now we are coming back to wider international spectrum and changing bank of Dnieper (as a conference site) to the beautiful dendrological park Sofiyivka in Uman’ (Cherkasy region), founded 210 ago.
